Let me be straight with you: I hate coffee. Always have. I genuinely cannot understand what kind of person tasted a raw coffee bean and thought, "You know what? We should water this down and make a hot drink out of it." Because regular coffee — drip, pour-over, cold brew, Folger's, whatever — is disgusting. It smells burnt, it tastes bitter, and I have never once understood the hype.

Then I moved to Miami. And my next-door neighbor was an Abuela.

Every single morning, the most incredible smell would drift through the window. It smelled like coffee — except it smelled SO GOOD. Like, impossibly good. Like someone had taken everything wrong about coffee and fixed it. I had to know what it was. Abuela took me in, handed me a tiny cup, and taught me everything. That was the day Cuban coffee changed my life.
